With 14+ participant Dwarves, several Hobbits, seven Elves, six Men, and three Wizards, there is a lot of scope for shipping.

The most popular ship is Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, with the pairing portmanteau names Bagginshield and Thilbo[1]. This grew from the story, with an assist from Martin Freeman's fanbase from Sherlock (BBC) and Richard Armitage's fanbase from everything he was ever in.

Note that Legolas/Gimli has been a popular relationship in both LOTR book and film fandom, but didn't appear in Hobbit movie fandom significantly until after Legolas's appearance in The Desolation of Smaug.[2]
