issue #1, cover of the official reprint (1995)

Leap in the Dark 1 was published in July 1993, is 100 pages in length. The art is by Tamar and e.k.

The proofreading was by Tarot and Wolfbane.

"Immoral support: the usual tribe of Portuguese priests, yellow-eyed androids, Jersey-based millionaires, olive-skinned golfers, family, friends and cats."

From the editorial:

Greetings, fellow-fan, and welcome to LEAP IN THE DARK. As far as I know this is a one-shot zine dedicated to Sam Beckett and Al Calavicci and their relationship; I'm not planning any follow-up edition in the immediate future.

Since this is the first CREVICHON PRESS zine to receive simultaneous publication in the U.S.A. this seems like a good opportunity to welcome new U.S. readers. Our zines have been selling over there for a long time, but not having the facilities to produce large numbers of copies we haven't advertised extensively. Thanks to Bill Hupe and Peg Kennedy we can now reach a lot more people. Whether you're a new friend or an 'old faithful' we hope you'll enjoy the intriguing mix of stories presented here.

This zine is actually slightly longer than originally intended; no excuses, we just miscalculated. Still, as the price is not affected, we will assume nobody minds too much!

A few words about some of the contents. Sharon's 'Miramar' is a crossover with the movie TOP GUN, and I believe she is planning another story about Hetherly and Mitchell which I hope to have the pleasure of printing in UNCHARTED WATERS at some future date. Sincere thanks to Sharon for being so understanding in the matter of rewrites.

"Stardust" is dedicated to Liz, for picking its author up off the floor one stinking hot day in Ellesmere Port. It originally appeared in DYAD 10 and is reprinted here by kind permission of MKASHEF Enterprises.

"Sympathy for the Devil" started life as a completely different story (sorry, Pamela) and went through a number of metamorphoses on the way. It was partially inspired by the episode 'Shock Theater' and partly, of course, by the film SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Special thanks to - Tarot for being very patient with the author during the writing of it, and to Tarot, Sharon and Sal for their comments.

"Double Time" was extracted from its author about as easily as drawing teeth, but "Believe in Me" wrote itself when she should have been studying. Tsk tsk! Incidentally it, too, was inspired by 'Shock Theater'.

"It's a Kind of Magic" was written to pander to the editor's liking for Tom Beckett; don't you just love it when authors indulge your every whim???

"Beautiful Sleaze" and "Willow Weep For Me" were unexpected treats that arrived in answer to my complaint that I was short of story submissions. If this is the sort of response I'm going to get, I think I'll complain more often! It's a pleasure to be able to include Leah's work here.

In addition, at the end of the zine you'll find details of other QL zine projects we have heard of - most of which -are slash - and some hint about forthcoming zines from CREVICHON PRESS.

Well, that's enough woffle from me. Go away and read the zine, and I hope you'll like it. If you do - or even if you don't - we'd love to hear from you.

  • Believe in Me by Sal ("A chance meeting in a bar; what could brilliant young scientist Sam Beckett have in common with washed-up ex-astronaut Al Calavicci? The answer's a surprise to them both.") (4)
  • Stardust by Katy Katana ("For some reason, Al isn't assisting Sam on his leap into the life of a jazz musician named Dusty. And the reason becomes clear once Sam has met Dusty's best friend." Another summary: "Leaping in to sort out the complicated love life of gay jazz musician Dusty Maxwell doesn't seem quite so bad--until one of the "complications" turns out to be Al!") (reprinted from Dyad #10) (15)
  • It's A Kind of Magic by Sal ("Is it just the drunk, or can Lieutenant Tom Beckett really see an Admiral in full dress uniform standing in the bar? And what does all this have to do with Tom's baby brother, Sam?") (35)
  • Beautiful Sleaze by Leah S. ("Memories choose the damnedest times to surface. Living the life of an elderly trailer park resident gives Sam a chance to examine his memories and assess his priorities.") (39)
  • Miramar by Sharon M. ("When Sam has to help save the life of a Top Gun pilot, the whole issue of gays in the military reveals the depth of his feelings for Al. But could Al ever feel the same way about him?") (crossover with Top Gun) (43)
  • Double Time by Sal ("After the Mexico City earthquake Sam spends many hours trapped in the wreckage of a building; his mission is to save a couple's marriage--but their lives are not the only ones affected.") (58)
  • Willow Weep For Me by Leah S. ("Sam leaps into the body of Al's girlfriend Sheila in the middle of their passionate affair--and finds out why Sheila was always so special to Al.") (67)
  • Sympathy for the Devil by Katy Katana ("One of those leaps. As a psychopathic serial killer with cannibalistic tendencies, how can Sam save the career of the FBI agent out to put him behind bars--or in his grave?") (crossover with The Silence of the Lambs) (77)
