Reactions/Reviews

This vid was reviewed by Amalthia at the reel vidding community on September 14, 2005:

Overall impression: This vid was okay. It was a good effort.

Titles: Titles were fine. Clear to the point and used some nice effects.

Music choice: I've never heard this song before and I don't think it was the best choice for a vid. Not because the song isn't good but because there was no real sense of rising action. It could just be a personal preference, but I like songs that start off slow and build up, and then go back down again. This song was the same all the way through and I don't think it helped the story in the vid.

Narration, Tone and Movement: the vid did a decent job of showing a connection between Carson and McKay, the tone matched the music.

Cuts, Transitions, Effects & Colouring/Coloring: The cuts were fine, I liked the transitions there was variety and I thought they were used effectively. The effects were used sparingly and constantly, which is good in my opinion.

Specific vid & music notes:

  • 0:52 - Noticed that it switches from full screen to wide screen...happens in a few other locations.
  • 2:17 - I liked this sequence of events, it seemed to fit the music rather nicely.
  • 2:47 - I also liked this scene.
  • 3:36 - I liked the final scene in the vid.

Final notes: I think I had a hard time enjoying the vid because of the song selection, it just didn't catch my attention. It was fine at first but after a minute and a half I didn't want to hear the song anymore and that makes it hard to continue watching the rest of the vid. I know a lot of people probably enjoy the song but pop songs are kind of hit and miss when it comes to vidding, mostly because they just repeat the same pattern over and over again, which is fine on the radio or as background noise, but vids need to tell a story of some sort and the music helps guide the person through that story.

How to make a basic action video 101. I know this vid isn't action, but this guide has some good advice for all vidders. Anyway I picked this one because it talks about music in a way that I'm not great at explaining.

My final suggestion is to make all your vid either widescreen or fullscreen, I felt kind of distracted every time it switched. I'm not sure what program you used to edit the vid and it could be a program limitation? But my recommendation is if you only have two or three clips that go widescreen it's probably best to cut them out all together or find fullscreen versions. You want your vid to stay consistent, either make it all widescreen or all fullscreen.
