History

Prevalence

Hermione/Ginnny is one of the most popular femslash pairing in the Harry Potter fandom, although femslash in general in much less common than het or slash. It is the most popular pairing on hp_girlslash, a LiveJournal community founded in March 2003.[2] On Archive of Our Own, founded in 2008, it is the second-most popular HP femslash ship, behind Ginny/Luna.[3]

Madam Hooch's Broom Closet wrote (pre-OOTP):

[Hermione/Ginny is] the most popular femmeslash ship. After all, they seem to be good friends, and we don't know what the girls get up to when Harry's not around. The majority of femmeslash stories are still Hr/G, but that's gradually changing as other ships gain popularity. Many people, on entering the femmeslash fandom, assume that Hr/G is the only femmeslash ship out there, and are greatly surprised to learn otherwise. Hr/G is sort of the Harry/Draco of the femmeslash fandom in that people often either passionately love it or passionately hate it.[4]
