Harlan Cunningham/Arend Schut is a rareship in Assassin's Creed fandom. The characters are canonically gay and introduced as lovers through unlockable audio files in Assassin's Creed: Rogue (though their storyline was originally planned to be part of the Initiates website plot).[1]

The characters were created by writer James Nadiger, who has stated his inspiration was Apollo and Midnighter's relationship from The Authority comic series:[2]

ericxxwilson asked: Are Harlan Cunningham and Arend Schut a couple, or just work together and happen to both be gay? Because on the wiki it says Schut is Cunningham's lover, but I don't remember that ever being explicitly said anywhere.

[James Nadiger:] It was stated explicitly in one one of the audio files. Phoenix Project: The Box, I think. So yes to everything: They work together as Assassins, but are also a couple and in love.

I don’t know if you’re a comic book fan at all, but I was inspired by Apollo & the Midnighter from Wildstorm’s THE AUTHORITY

An email in Assassin's Creed: Syndicate revealed they got married and Arend Schut became "Arend Schut Cunningham". When a fan asked on Twitter if Harlan also changed his name after marriage, Nadiger said "I feel that Arend really wanted to take Harlan's last name. Beyond that, I honestly haven't thought about it!"[3]
