Hammerspace is a term from anime/manga fandom, and appeared around the mid-1990s. It refers to an unseen dimension where assorted items can be stored and retrieved at a moment's notice, such as food, weapons, or henshin sticks.

Origin

The source is generally credited to Akane Tendou, a character from the comedy series Ranma 1/2, who would pull hammers from out of nowhere. While earlier examples can be seen in classic Western cartoons such as Looney Tunes, the term today seems to be thought of almost exclusively as an anime trope.

However, the 2023 animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse explicitly mentions the concept and briefly displays an infobox, comics-style.
