Reactions/Reviews

This vid was reviewed by Sunryse00 at the reel vidding community on November 29, 2006:

Overall Impression: I felt the vid lacked a focused POV switching from Michael to Sara making it hard to follow. I think it would have been a good song choice for either character but trying to make it fit both at the same time became to confusing and jumbled.

Titles: The vocals start at the very beginning of the music so there wasn't the normal intro to deal with, the vidder chose to use a photo shopped picture of Michael and Sara as a title card before the music and vid starts.

There were no ending credits.

Music choice: The choice of music is an Evanescence song that is over vidded in just about every fandom and didn’t have anything remarkable or audibly unique. While the song was a good choice for Michael or Sara's story it didn't really pull me into the music and leave me with any vivid impressions.

Narration, Tone and Movement: The vidder chose to go for the literal instead of the metaphorical. On bleeding there's bleeding, on tears there's tears, and on "you" or "I" there's a scene of Sara or Michael depending on who is in the scene or who's POV which made the story very uneven and hard to follow.

The tone of the music is sad and pain driven and the vidder chose to use clips of Michael and Sara sad or in pain.

Movement is pretty basic coming from within the clips themselves, and since the song is on the sad and slower side the there are a lot of stationary, slow moving, and character talking and looking type clips.

Cuts, Transitions, Effects & Coloring: Cuts are pretty straight forward without anything that stands out with a few that are little long or choppy. Transitions are mainly the straight cuts with a few cross fades randomly thrown in. The use of effects seems to be certain clips slowed down and there doesn't seem to be any color enhancements that I noticed.

Specific vid & music notes:

  • 0:41 I like the scene of Michael opening the door on the "I'll save myself/maybe I'll wake up for once" The timing and the look on Michael's face as something goes right are a good choice.
  • 0:44 During the line "Not tormented...Daily defeated by you ". There is first a clip of Sara than Michael where they are doing nothing but looking at each other, or away from each other, or at something or someone off camera. Without context it's hard to tell what it means especially when given the lyrics.
  • 1:15 The vid does a sudden shift in POV cutting to a shot of Sara with a drink at the bar on the "drowning in you" which throws me since the first minute seems to be from Michael's POV.
  • 1:23 from here the vid gets confusing as it keeps shifting between Sara and Michael.

Final notes: Is it Sara's or Michael's POV? From scene to scene it switches from one character to the other pulling me out of the vid and never giving me as a viewer the chance to get emotionally invested in either characters pain and story. After awhile it just began to feel like random scenes of the characters in some type of physical or emotional pain set to the music without anything to tie it together.

I think it would have been a much stronger vid if the vidder would have stuck to one POV and told either Michael‘s or Sara‘s story. By focusing on just one character the viewer would get pulled into the story and the music instead of just hearing music with moving pictures. I did like some of the clip choices and think if it was more focused it would really have the impact the vidder desired.
