From a Flyer for the First Issue

A fanzine dedicated to the adventures of that intrepid journalist, Sarah Jane Smith and her alien companion, the Doctor...

Wait a minute! (you say) Isn't that supposed to be the other way around...?

FROM THE NOTEBOOK OF SARAH JANE is a fanzine about Sarah and her Doctor (Both of him.) It combines the talents of artists nationwide (well... Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland and Tennessee so far...)

Filks, poem, artwork, the occassional [sic] long-winded tale, we have it all!

For example, what would happen if Sarah Jane met Leela, and they had to rescue the Doctor from... but that's the story. PARTNERS IN CRIME

Or if Harry managed to strand Sarah, the Doctor, and himself in the middle of the last stronghold of an evil dictatorial state. Could the Doctor leave things alone? Can Sarah survive the mind probe? CENTRAL STATE

Issue #1 should be available in early January if our TARDIS doesn't break down.

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

While I do recommend parts of this zine, it is a real first effort, and as usual, in these first effort zines, it shows. There is a notable lack of artwork; that which is there is not of the best. The zine’s layout is simple, but very clear and readable. I was impressed by the good technical editing. The stories and poetry ranged from a few very good, to the rest very mediocre, not uncommon to new zines, or to a relatively new zine universe, as Doctor Who is here in the US. The above should be judged in that context. As the price of the zine is very reasonable, and in lieu of the 50-page format, I don’t think it unreasonable that true Doctor Who fans would order this zine for the price, with the gems it does contain at first anyway. As time goes on, however, and the zine continues in its bimonthly status, the reviewer would like to see two things happen, the editors accepting only higher quality stories, and turning their editing sword to a fine edge – some of the more mediocre stories had potential… This zine has made a good start… [I] have hopes that quality will improve in the future, due the promising premise of the zine – Sarah Jane, and her love, in whatever form, for her Doctor.[1]
