Fred/Hermione is a het pairing in the Harry Potter fandom involving Hermione Granger and Fred Weasley.

Canon

Hermione and Fred actually had a friendly platonic relationship in canon, despite the fact that Hermione didn't approve of some of the twins' antics. Even while she was a Prefect, it didn't affect their relationship. Fred and George often tried to lighten Hermione up by joking around with her. Hermione admitted that she believed they could work "extraordinary magic" and were clever and creative with their spell work,[1] although she doesn't always agree with how they use it. The twins were also extra protective of her; having tried to physically attack Draco Malfoy after he called her a "Mudblood".[2] Hermione wasn't afraid to stand up to Fred or George, especially in defense of their testing the first-years with experimental sweets, and they never held a grudge against her for it.

Fandom

To the question of why she shipped Fred/Hermione, Portia answered:

"If you look at it logically it makes sense.
As for the 'hints' of a romantic Fred and Hermione, in the second book when Malfoy calls her a Mudblood, Fred has to be physically restrained from attacking him. Yes I realize Ron took a backfired spell for her and definitely received the sympathy vote. However looking at it from the outside, Fred didn't even think to grab his wand and instead he reverted to a more baser instinct, which is to beat the snot out of him. Considering a person raised in the magical worlds first instinct is in fact magic, it speaks extensively of just how angered he was. Yes, I realize there could be other motives for his reaction but just consider it.
Another hint is when Hermione is punched by the twins Boxing Telescope. Fred instantly offers her a healing balm, which by itself isn't a big deal until you consider their nature. The Twins has never showed an inch of remorse or sympathy when victims of their pranks arise, even when it comes to their own family, which begs the question, why does she get special treatment?
I know everyone likes to say that they are "opposites" but in fact they aren't as opposite as people like to view them. They are both extraordinarily intelligent, even if shown in different ways, Fred with his mind-boggling products at the joke shop and Hermione... well do I really need an example for that? Both with a strong sense of loyalty and love for their family.
And if all this doesn't make you consider the pairing how about this; Lily and James Potter. Lily and Hermione are very much alike. Both caring and intelligent witches who stuck to the rules and were thoroughly incensed by pranks played by the marauders/twins. James and Fred were alike in many ways as well, both playing on the Quidditch team, both pranksters, both with a incredible sense of loyalty and both, despite their lack of remorse for their prank victims, had a strong sense of right and wrong."[3]

On October 27 to November 2, 2013, on Tumblr a pairing appreciation week happened for Fred/Hermione, titled FremioneWeek [1], which was started by whyfirefliesflash-writes[4]

Fan Theory

There is agreed rumor/urban myth in the Harry Potter fandom where it was said that JK Rowling had stated in an interview that had she continued with her original plans for the HP story, Fred and Hermione would have ended up together (this is if Fred lived, Arthur and Ron died).[3][5][6] No one can find this "interview" however, and it is believed to be a fan theory that was posted to Pinterest group Harry Potter Facts,[7] despite people claiming to have read the elusive interview.[5] This rumor seems to have come either in 2011 or sometime before that.

While many fans of the canon pairing of Ron/Hermione dislike the fan theory/rumor,[8][9] there are a few who are interested in the idea of Fred/Hermione because of this.[10][11][12]

Common Tropes, Fanon & Themes

  • Fanon often has Hermione able to tell the twins apart, and seems to be the most common headcanon shared by Fred/Hermione fans.
  • Threesomes are fairly common to find especially with Fred/Hermione with George, but sometimes includes the other Weasley Brothers such as Ron, Charlie and Percy.
  • Babies Ever After: In many works of fanfiction there are depictions of Fred having children with Hermione instead of Ron.
  • Not So Different: In many instances fanfiction will depict Hermione, after she’s finished being mad at a previous prank, realizing that Fred is not just a jokester, but a smart one. They connect over their intellectual abilities as Hermione realizes how beautiful and complicated his magic is.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Hermione oftentattles on Fred and George for their pranks.
  • Not So Above It All: Some stories depict Hermione joining in with Fred’s pranks, though she is known to get annoyed or tattle (see: Little Miss Snarker).
  • Heroes Want Red Heads: Hermione is often paired with a Weasley brother, who all have red hair.
  • Second Love: Stories often portrayed Hermione breaking up with Ron (First Love) or realizing Ron isn’t right for her and then falling in love and dating Fred instead.
  • First Love: Hermione as a young girl having an innocent crush on Fred or Hermione loving Ron as her First Love, but then falling for Fred as her Second Love (above).
  • Dude Magnet: Hermione attracting more than one Weasley brother or love interest, very often Fred and George or Fred and Ron.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen Hermione will sometimes be portrayed as cold or distant from Fred, making it Fred’s place to melt that icy exterior and win her heart.
  • Outlaw Couple: Fred and Hermione pulling pranks together and avoiding the consequences
  • Die for Our Ship: Ron falls into this trope a lot with Fred and Hermione shipping fanfiction. He’ll be the thing that’s preventing their love, or he’ll be with Hermione and the writer wants her to be with Fred so they’ll kill him off or make her break it off with him so she can be with Fred.
  • High School Sweethearts: Fred and Hermione dating while at Hogwarts.
  • Why Can’t I Hate You: This goes along with Defrosting the Ice Queen, Hermione often doesn't want to love Fred, sometimes she’s worried about hurting Ron and others she just doesn't believe that she can love him, but in the end she can’t deny it any longer.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Hermione = uptight, Fred = wild!
  • She/he Cleans Up Nicely: Hermione and Fred aren’t always written as the most outright beautiful characters, so occasionally you’ll see them have a nice makeover or dress nice for an event.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Fred and Hermione have known each other since they were little;sometimes people choose to emphasize this in their romance fan fictions.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: This occurs in a lot of the R rated stories.
  • Brilliant But Lazy : Fred is often portrayed in this manner, smart but prefers not to put that much effort into his schooling. He’d rather put it into pranks.
  • Anti-Hero: Fred and George are good guys, but they're also tricksters and can be pragmatic.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Fred and George can play a lot of jokes, but it's all in good fun and they normally never try to actively hurt anyone.
  • The Prankster: This is normally the heart and soul of Fred’s character.
  • Trickster Archetype: Fred loves to play pranks on people, goes along with Prankster.
  • Trickster Twins: Fred and George’s joke shop is often a setting for fanfiction, and you’ll often see the twins pranking together.
  • Twin Bante: If a work of fanfiction includes George, you’ll most likely see this. They both can finish each other's sentences, which often includes sarcastic quips.

Pre-HP7:

  • Hogwarts Era stories are very popular, often rewriting scenes or actual storylines where Fred and Hermione become friends and later in a relationship.[13]
  • Pregnancy trope is often used, usually to get Fred/Hermione to admit their feelings for the other and a way to get them together.
  • Marriage Law trope is not as popular as other pairings for Hermione (such as Snape/Hermione or Hermione/Lucius), but it does often show up.

Post-HP7:

  • Denialfic aka "Fred Lives" is often used in stories where Hermione/Fred are together or getting together. This often uses EWE for the canon Hermione/Ron info, often making them break-up and realize they are better off as friends.
  • Hermione often reflects back to her and Fred's relationship or moments prior to his death.
  • Either in Denial or Fix-it fics (or even stories pre-HP7), Hermione actually joins Fred and George at their shop Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, working in the front or potions/charms-wise.
