Archive Links

I plan on pulling wayback, webcite and archive.is archives for all links that use templates. See my post to the gardener's email list. Anything that uses a {{cite web}} will have links populated via the {{webarchive}} template. Phoenix (talk) 14:59, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Phoenix, thank you! :)
I have a couple of questions about what this bot does, so I can make sure to work with it and not at cross purposes.
1. What does "pulling archives" mean? Will it be retrieving archives that already exist, or creating new archives, or both?
2. Will the bot be able to tell if the archive has the actual content we're trying to save? Examples I have encountered:
  • This blog has moved (example)
  • Post not found
  • Request Denied: You do not have permission to access this page. (example): this is the page that showed up when trying to archive tumblr pages on 15 December 2018
  • That page has a music player, which can't be archived
  • You must log in or enter a password to view that post
Apologies if you already answered this in the gardeners' e-mail list; I'm not a gardener so I can't see it.

User:Bikedancelaugheat, So I ran the mass archiving of Tumbler links before the tumbler blocking of archive.org. The plan going forward is fairly straight forward. Once the links are in {{cite web}} templates I will search wayback, webcite and archive.is archives for the original URL (if an accompanying archive URL doesn't already exist). Then it will populate the {{webarchive}} template with a note that humans should review what was found and ensure that the archives are valid. (This should take care of most cases with just a human needed to double check, but there will be a handful that require manual fixing) Phoenix (talk) 14:40, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Archived BB-8

It's not much, but I made archived versions of the Tumblr links (save for the dead one) on the BB-8 page that was listed here. I don't know were to move the link in this project page now, so thought I'd tell the editors so they can move the link where it needs to be (if it needs to move at all). Keep up all the great work, there are so many things to archive from Tumblr! Patchlamb (talk) 19:13, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much, Patchlamb! There are so many things to archive from Tumblr, and I have so many things I want to archive from Tumblr, that I deeply appreciate every link I don't have to archive (or find an archive of) myself. Every little bit does count!
Since the BB-8 page has all the Tumblr links archived and added to the page, I'm moving it up to the section List of Fanlore pages with archive links of all Tumblr links (excepting dead links) added to the page (that's a move from section 8.3 to section 8.1, if you look at the infobox). The broken link would be added to the Dead Links section, but I poked around and managed to fix it! (I wasn't expecting to fill in that square of my Fanlore Bingo card, so thank you for calling it to my attention!)
Also, if you find any more broken links, putting {{Dead link}} next to them will make them easier for other editors to find.
Thanks again for your work!

Update

I updated Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson today (found a new link that wasn't archived yet) and now I'm wondering if I should leave a note on the main page. If yes, in what format? Delete the old note from 2019 or just add the new information? --SecurityBreach (talk) 07:16, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Template

I tried using this template

{{source| url = http://www.example.org | title = Link text | archiveurl = http://www.examplearchive.org | archivedate = YYYY-MM-DD }}

several times now, but for some reason I don't understand the archivedate never shows up. Everything else is fine. Is there some explanation for this? That would be great :D --SecurityBreach (talk) 08:22, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

You have the html slightly wrong, for archiving citations it should be
{{cite web| url = http://www.example.org | title = Link text | archiveurl = http://www.examplearchive.org | archivedate = YYYY-MM-DD }}
If instead you want to add an archive link beside a fanwork link, you should use:
{{source|url=http://www.example.org | title = Link text | archiveurl = http://www.examplearchive.org}}
I hope that helps -- Kingstoken (talk) 10:39, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I actually copypasted the template from the project page (see section: resources), so I guess we need to change it there, too. I've used the template
{{source|url=http://www.example.org | title = Link text | archiveurl = http://www.examplearchive.org}}
before (it always works) and wanted to use the one suggested on the project page instead to follow the project guidelines.
Thank you again for your kind advise! --SecurityBreach (talk) 11:01, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Twitter

Twitter's days are very likely numbered. The site has become a hotbed of bigotry, extremism, and conspiracy theories. I'd say the situation is more urgent than Tumblr's was in 2018. I believe it would be prudent to begin archiving all Twitter links on Fanlore. Where possible, we should redirect to alternatives, e.g. replacing art links with ones from DA, ArtStation, etc. Archive.today seems to do a better job of archiving tweets than the Wayback Machine. The downside is that archived copies come with ads. Nitter.net can also be used to read full Twitter threads without having to log-in to the actual site.
