The story starts pre-canon, with the characters meeting and having an anonymous one-night stand the night before they report to the police academy, and weaves the story of their complicated sexual relationship through the entire aired canon and beyond.

Both parts were published in 2004. The first part contains 198 pages, and the second part contains 214 pages.

From the Editorial

I am still somewhat in awe of the fact that I actually completed Evolution. I'm a great starter, but not so great at making it to the finish line. It's been an incredible experience. Incredibly exciting when the guys were talking in my ear so fast I could barely keep up, and just as incredibly frustrating when they would suddenly shut up... To Lorraine. I am awed by your talent. I'm still not entirely convinced that, not only are you an amazing artist, but I think you might also have the ability to read minds—long distance no less. You saw what I saw when I wrote the scenes you illustrated, and then you brought them to life for me. And last, but certainly not least, to Keri. You and Paula published my first Starsky and Hutch story, and when I began to realize just where Evolution might be headed, I knew immediately that I wanted you to edit it. I handed you seventy-five pages at ZCon, you plugged into my vision, and have been an absolute rock through every page since. You listened to me moan and groan and babble, and reassured me every time that there was a tape to break and that I would break it. If not for you, I'd still be wondering if I really could write Evolution into the aired series. I never expect to repeat this unique experience again in my life—unless, of course, you decide you like the first fifty pages of "Haven".[1]<g>

If there was any one piece of fanfic uppermost in my mind when I created "Circles," it was Dana Austin Marsh's epic two-part zine, "Evolution." [2]
