Ella Enchanted is a Newbery Honor book written by Gail Carson Levine and published in 1997. The story is a retelling of Cinderella featuring various mythical creatures.

Canon

At her birth, Ella of Frell receives a foolish fairy's gift—the “gift” of obedience. Ella must obey any order, whether it's to hop on one foot for a day and a half, or to chop off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not accept her fate...
Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse forever.[1]

In 2006, Gail Carson Levine publishes Fairest, a retelling of Snow White and set in the same world as Ella Encanted.

  • Ella of Frell

Film

The Ella Enchanted film was directed by Tommy O'Haver and written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. It loosely followed the book and starred Anne Hathaway as Ella and Hugh Dancy as Prince Charmont.

The film received mostly mixed reviews, and was heavily criticized for its changes to the source material. Levine stated that the film is "so different from the book that it's hard to compare them," noting the addition of new characters such as Sir Edgar and Heston, and suggested "regarding the movie as a separate creative act."[2]

Fandom

The fandom mainly focuses on the book, with over 500 fanfiction posted to FanFiction.net's category[3] More Fanworks focused on the film appear on Archive of Our Own.[4] A LiveJournal community, ella_enchanted_, which is focused on the film version opened on April 12, 2004 and stayed active until 2009.

Original characters often appeared as the main focus in fanfics on FFN.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is another book by Gail Carson Levine which has a much smaller fandom.

Fusion crossover AUs with Ella Enchanted are somewhat common. Usually these are works for another fandom in which a character is placed in a world like Ella's cursed with obedience. These may be called "Ella Enchanted AU" works.

Shipping

The canon pairing of Ella/Prince Charmont is popular but on Archive of Our Own a popular crossover pairings of Prince Charmont/One Eye (from Valhalla Rising) and Prince Charmont/Johann Struensee (from A Royal Affair) has appeared.
