On December 13, 1994, EMXC, a The X-Files fan fiction mailing list, was created. It was moderated by SciNut and run from AOL at EMXC@aol.com.

The list was created in an effort to circumvent AOL's prohibition on uploading X-Files fanfic after 20th Century Fox Television's request to pull copyrighted materials. Since fanfiction is a gray area as far as copyright is concerned, AOL decided to "play it safe" and prohibited X-Files fanfiction as well. (Despite this, they still allowed Star Trek fic in their public libraries.)

The EMXC worked exclusively through email, with each story sent individually as an email attachment. 3-5 emails were sent everyday except Sunday, not including list business, with an average of 30 emails per week.

Every week (usually Sunday or Monday), a story schedule was mailed that listed what would be sent on any given day of the week. The schedule included Title, Author, and parts to work and also included a tentitive title list for the upcoming week.

An online archive for EMXC was created by Versaphile in January 1998. Maintenance was passed to Cody Nelson in 1999 until 2003, when updates ceased.

Awards

The mailing list also held annual fan fiction awards from 1995-1997: the EMXC Awards.
