dreams for wings and wanderers is a Merlin/Arthur Temeraire fusion by etharei. It was written for Paperlegends 2012.
Summary: Dragons are feared and mistrusted throughout Albion, and there are very few of them left in Camelot, for Uther’s long campaign against magic also included hunting down all the dragons in the wild. Now, Camelot is recovering from the invasion of Cenred and Morgause's army. Prince Arthur is the one in charge, and Merlin finds out that his secret regular visits to the covert haven't been very secret at all. There's a great deal of manly bonding with the Knights, inquisitive dragons being inquisitive, and a record-breaking number of near-death experiences for Merlin. And this is before he gets his very own dragon. (A Merlin/Temeraire fusion.)
reni_m created chapter headers in the form of Roman numerals decorated with miniature dragons and several illustrations for the story.[1] The mediums are watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal, white charcoal, and sharpie pen.
Recs and Reviews
I'm not familiar with Temeraire but that didn't matter, the dragons fit well into the canon world. I liked the way the author drew the supporting characters: Leon, Percival, Gwaine and Gwen all come to life and it's refreshing to see a Gwen with ambitions and dreams of her own beyond being Arthur's queen. Merlin and Arthur of course, discover that they are essential to each other and there are some really lovely turns of phrase throughout the fic.[2]
I know nothing about Temeraire book series, but I think the author's knowledge of the series gave a huge amount of depth into the dragons, dragon riders and any related knowledge in this story. I would say that the focus on this story is about Merlin and the dragons. The world building was very interesting to read and fits so well with the canon setting. There's a bit in there with Gwen that felt slightly awkward and Arthur's feelings for Merlin seem a bit sudden, but THE DRAGONS. They're totally kick ass! It was a fun read and certainly different from anything else I've read recently.[3]
Really fascinating fic! I don't know anything about the fused fandom, but the dragons here are perfectly incorporated into the Merlin Universe. Canon has been tweaked just slightly to account for the new dragon lore, but the whole thing is really seamless. Love Arthur and Merlin's slowly evolving relationship here, and Merlin's characterization is especially fabulous.[4]
