Dishonored is a first-person action-adventure game series from Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks. The gameplay relies heavily on stealth, and players can choose to complete missions with stealth and trickery, or combat and assassination. Storyline elements can change drastically based on the player's actions and decisions. The series takes place in a fictional world where the dominant nation is The Empire of the Isles. The setting is somewhat steampunk, with magical elements.

Synopsis

  • The first Dishonored was released in 2012. The protagonist Corvo Attano is the trusted bodyguard to Jessamine Kaldwin, the Empress of the Isles. When he is framed for her murder and for the kidnapping of her daughter Emily, Corvo must disguise himself and seek revenge on his accusers. The Outsider, a mysterious godlike being who lives in the dream world known as the Void, helps Corvo on his quest by offering him supernatural powers. Downloadable content for the game includes a different perspective of the story, told from the point of view of the Empress's assassin, Daud.
  • Dishonored 2 was released in 2016 and takes place fifteen years after the events of the first game. The story starts on the anniversary of Jessamine's assassination, when Delilah (introduced in the Daud DLCs) shows up at Dunwall Tower and stages a coup to place herself as the new Empress instead of Emily. Players can choose to play through the storyline as Corvo or as Emily. Whomever you choose, the Outsider will again offer to grant the powers of Void magic.
  • Dishonored: Death of the Outsider was released in 2017, and follows Billie Lurk as the protagonist helping Daud who seeks to take down the Outsider, whom Daud blames for the Empire's troubles.

There are also tie-in novels, Dishonored: The Corroded Man and Dishonored: The Return of Daud, and a couple of tie-in comic book series.

Fandom

The Dishonored fandom has a small, but growing, collection of fanfiction on Archive of Our Own. There is also a dedicated Dishonored fan art group on deviantArt.

Shipping

Some common pairings include:

Some segments of the fandom disapprove of shipping the Outsider with anyone, their reasoning being that he canonically was 15 years old when he became the Outsider, regardless of the thousands of years since then.

Common tropes and fanon

  • Since the gender of Wyman (Emily's lover) is intentionally never specified, many fans have the fanon that they are non-binary.[1]
  • Since Corvo has no spoken lines in the first game, many fanfics depicted him as mute, using sign language to communicate.[2]
