Discovered on a Webpage (DOAW) was a website run by several fans, JJ, Mike Adamson, and Dave Downes.

JJ (and many other pseuds) was Jane of Australia, Adamson was JJ's brother, and Downes was JJ's husband.

The site was a one-stop shop for Nut Hatch Press, as well as a hub for a small amount of archived fiction. The site included several editorials, essays, an interview with Jane of Australia, as well as many fannish things for sale.

From the site: "ABOUT DOAW (and its "swarmed" daughter sites!): Discovered On A Webpage is an ezine, an on-line fannish resource ... intended as a fannish portal, a jumping off point for many fandoms. We've been online for about seven years now. In that time we've grown from "just" fanzines, to software, audio and artwork, and at the time of this upload (May 2003) we're about to make the jump into video productions ... vastly more than "just" music vids, or song tapes, though heaven knows, they're difficult enough. There's no "just" about music vides ... but we've gotten into video editing into a big way, and where we hope to go is documentary, feature and eventually edutainment. Gasp!" [1]

The site was closely entwined with DreamCraft. See Mel Keegan for much more.

A 2003 Update

Greetings from Down Under, from Dave and JJ (and Bagheera, the cat who thinks he's the boss). You've already noticed a change at DISCOVERED ON A WEBPAGE ... if nothing else, we have a new "doorknocker," and a whole new way of getting into, and getting around, the site.

If you've been on our e-newsletter list for the last couple of years, you will already know that DOAW has been "swaming" since late 2000: the main site had become a behemoth. It was a 15MB juggernaut that threatened to run us down! It had become difficult to add things into the site, because it was so large, it had to be spread over three different servers ... and the user interface, which had been streamlined to the very best of the ability of our web-head, was inclined to turn into a seven-headed monster every time we even looked at the possibility of updating the original site.

DOAW had been up, in four different incarnations, since 1996. The original site was just a few pages, and no one ever dreamed it would grow so large. We did everything we could do get on-line space for it to grow into, and the interface was re-re-redesigned in attempts to make it simple. Each redesign did work to a degree ... making it possible for the tyrannosaurus chick to grow into the full-blown critter.

And by 2002, we knew we had to break DOAW down into a number of "daughter" sites, to regain coherence. By this time, we had added loads of fandoms, we'd branched out into CD-Rom, audio CD, art reproductions, celebrity photos, and so on, and we desperately needed coherence.

The old hive started to "swarm" a short while later, and the daughter-sites have been uploading at a rate of about one a month which is about as fast as we can work on the project. At this time, there is still a nucleus of long-standing, archival material which is on the old DOAW, and which has not been revamped and moved to a new home ... hence, the original site itself is still up, and will be for about another twelve months.

However, about 60% of the existing site has swarmed and set up new hives, and ALL of the new material which we've added to our "on-line presence" in the last 18 months was never added into DOAW at all, was set up as "daughter sites" ... Highlander, Lord of the Rings, Cross My Heart Online, and so much more, it's actually impossible to quick-list it here. But —

From *this* page you can click through to anywhere ... First, we'd like to show you our site index, which is a new directory-style interface for DOAW ... it's a simple text list (albeit with gorgeous photos on the side) driven by a contents list by show-title at the top. Each of the daughter sites is subject-specific ... meaning, you review the index and load ONLY the content you want. You don't have to load a meg, and thread your way through six subsidiary pages to find, for example, a photo of Lewis Collins, a set of Stargate bookmarks, a Highlander art print or a Starsky and Hutch fanzine. That's got to be a relief.

From the Site Index you can decide at a glance exactly where you need to be, and if you do indeed need to access materials from the old DOAW (for example, the Nut Hatch fanzine pages, where a lot of the zines still live, pending their own page, or the editorial content of the old site), you can still click through to the old site, and yes, the content of the old site has been updated to May 2003. We think it has one more upgrade to go through on the old format, and then, about twelve months from now, it will pop up in its new guise and be a permanent archive of "what was." [2]
