Publisher's Guidelines for Writers (Comrades)

From Comrades in 1992:

Writers Guidelines:

[...]

Comrades is a "/" anthology zine devoted to the belief that Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin were more than Field Partners. And in case that is putting it a trifle too subtle. Comrades is an all-adult, same-sex zine, with Napoleon and Illya as our centerpieces. You know: “those" kind of stories. Gay stories. The fun stiffstuff.

CONTENT: Everything you always suspected, but never had the nerve to say aloud (mumbling is understandable.) Anything and everything: from rape-me-till-you-love-me; to warm and tender, achingly gentle snuggle-bunnie stories and everything in between. Let your imagination and libido run wild. Stories can be implied sex or graphic, although the editor prefers graphic. Comrades places no limit on language, violence, sex or kinkiness in a story. The major difference is that while our other zine, Del Floria's Press, tries to keep a PG rating. Comrades can —and often does— run into the XXX category. Authors are welcome to use pen-names. Only the editor (who personally types all Comrades manuscripts into the computer) and the cats who sit on top of the computer (it’s warm up there, you know) will ever know who you really are. (We will resist saying Comrades contributors prefer to work “undercover.”)

LENGTH: Any length considered, from one-paragraph to novella size, but try to keep it under 40 pages, typed double-spaced. If you have a long story (anything over 10 pages) you must give us some action—in bed, that is (or on the floor, kitchen table, etc.) 40 pages of all talk and no action bores any dedicated slash fan. Also wanted are filler items and nasty filks, one-liners, and jokes. Novellas will be considered for publication as a single piece under Samizdat Press. Please do not send your original manuscript. Send a photocopy only, in case it goes bye-bye in the mail.

MANUSCRIPTS: Must be typed. All accepted submissions will be data-entered (via the Clandestine Typing Service) into the Samizdat computer. The writer will be sent a galley for approval, and a list of editorial suggestions, if any. No changes will be made in a manuscript without the author’s approval, but all submissions must be open to editing.

ILLUSTRATIONS: Please see the Artist’s Guidelines.

CROSS UNIVERSE: AU stories will be considered on their own individual merits. We do not normally run AU, and those that we do must be U.N.C.L.E. stories, not just “Kelly and Scott go to a gay orgy and meet another couple of gay spies." Likewise, unless you’ve got one helluva story, the Vulcan is out.

Publisher's Guidelines for Artists (Comrades)

From Comrades in 1992:

Artists Guidelines:

ARTWORK: All art must be black-and-white, such as pen and ink, very dark pencil, or charcoal, as color is beyond our budget. All art must be reproducable on a standard photocopier. Art will be screened if necessary, although if you can supply camera-ready art, we will bless you forever. Light pencil sketches arc acceptable only if they will reproduce. To make sure your art will reproduce, please make a photocopy of the art you intend to submit, and satisfy yourself as to its reproducability. If you cannot get it to copy well (even with screening) then we won’t be able to use it either. Sorry. If you submit a story with artwork and have a preference as to where in the story you want the art placed, let us know. We’ll send you a galley with the art incorporated for approval. All original artwork will be returned if so requested.

SELECTION; Final selection of artwork for publication will be the Editor’s decision. What the Editor considers poor art will not be used. All readers have experienced the delight of reading along in a great story, then turning the page and getting slapped in the face with a horrendous piece of "art" that served no purpose except to take up space while ruining the mood of the story the author has worked so hard to establish. So even if your best friend in the whole world illustrated your story or you did it yourself, be prepared to have your art returned if it is not up to Comrades standards. (Our only exception is cartoon art, where we will permit the comedy of the piece to carry along the idea). Photo art is acceptable if you supply the photo. Since we will need to keep the photo as a master for future runs of the zine, we are prepared to buy your photo or a duplicate of it, at a price agreed upon by all parties involved.

CONTENT: Anything MFU. As for the rest—go for it! Full Frontal Nudity and Rump Ranger Illos are rabidly sought. The editor personally feels that Napoleon and Iliya are both circumcised, but artists are welcome to state their own...”views.’’ And yes: it is perfectly okay to show their “naughty bits.” The burning question of circumcision is left to the artist’s preference, but your yenta editor prefers cut, thank you. Illos for stories arc always needed (check with us to see what we have in the works if you arc interested in taking on a project like that). Also wanted are fillers, borders, portraits, etc. Tacky, tasteless cartoons are always welcome.
