This is a rollercoaster of a fic, and if you're sensitive to angst you might want to give it a pass--specifically, Ray's mom dies in the first part of the fic, and there's a rather grisly undercover case in the latter parts. But it's really well-written angst, and the fic is full of love for Ray Kowalski, or at least it feels that way to me. Also, this fic feels fresh and new--it's quite plotty and does things I'd never seen before, and there are touches of quirkiness and humor in it that just fill me with love. [1]
A seriously well written story, spanning several years, involving undercover work, and humongous amounts of angst. All from Kowalski's point of view, three quarters of it has you either weeping into your handkerchief, or biting your knuckles. When we finally get to Fraser he is so deeply (and believably) fucked up that you can hardly see how things could work out... Warnings for character death (OK, not much of a spoiler since it is obvious from the first paragraph) Ray's Mom, and a very realistic depiction of human trafficking, including children. (Nothing graphic.) Oh... and a bad guy getting on the wrong end of Ray. In four parts. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to follow the links to the whole thing... here's the first part, and I'm sure you'll want to find out what happens next. (Links at end of each section.) [2]
