Da Vinci's Inquest was a Canadian cop show starring Nicholas Campbell as Dominic Da Vinci, a former cop turned coroner in Vancouver. The series has a sequel, Da Vinci's City Hall following on from the plot of the final season of Inquest where Da Vinci ran for mayor, City Hall chronicles his tenure in the mayors office. A follow-up film, The Quality of Life explored a murder mystery set against the backdrop of higher political ambitions.
The main character was based on Larry Campbell, a former coroner and mayor of Vancouver. He served as a technical advisor on the show. The shows mirrored some real-life issues in Vancouver, including the murders of several Native women, the drive for a needle exchange and a red-light district in the city, Native rights, the multi-cultural makeup of Vancouver, as well as conflicts between the city police, politicians and the RCMP.
Considered part of the C6D group of fandoms, the show became popular with many due South fans. The show's much grittier and realistic tone, and less than favourable portrayal of the RCMP, allowed for fanworks that were a little less light-hearted than a lot of due South stories.
The main slash pairing of interest in the show started out as Dominic/Mick Leary. Leary, half of the main police investigative unit on the show is played by Ian Tracey. The complex and changing ensemble cast led to opportunities for many other slash, het and gen works.
