Summary from the publisher regarding the print zine: "This was written in the late 1990's/early 2000's. This story has not been edited in any way; it has been left as was written by a beginning writer.
In a society of rules and regulations, there is no place for a Sentinel. When he is exiled to an island of outcasts and misfits, one person chooses to go with him - Teacher, a higher caste member of society."
Summary from the author regarding the netfic: "Jim Ellison stood before the Conclave, already a condemned man. He knew it, they knew it. The one thing he did not know was his punishment. That's why he was here today. To have his punishment meted out by the Conclave.
He might get death. The tall handsome man of low Caste had accepted that stoically. He might be sterilized and put into the mines to work until he died. That also he had accepted. There were any number of things the Conclave could do to him, but he thought those two the most likely. He had spent an inordinate amount contemplating his punishment, and as a Killer, knew the ways he could be punished for being different.
Jim frowned as he stared at the dirt floor of the cavern. He had not taken a lover of higher Caste, or thieved, or bribed...he was just...different. He could hear things, see things. Not to mention that the way things smelled, tasted and felt was bizarre, just as bizarre to him as to the others."

From the author: 'Women are not figures of authority, society is one that believes in castes and forms of slavery as well as banishment. And individuals may be held accountable for the acts of others. Not necessarily fair, but it is accepted in this particular AU.
