I think the name of this category is way too confusing. Every single page in this category was miscategorised. People are thinking it means "people involved in the entertainment industry". --Kyuuketsukirui 12:11, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

People are thinking it means "people involved in the entertainment industry".
Why is this wrong? The category "People" has the subcategory "Industry". Who if not people involved in the entertainment industry should be categorized as such? --Doro 12:48, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Agreed - the category page says it's meant to include articles about creators of fannish source texts. People like Joss Whedon and Doris Egan belong here. --Arduinna 16:17, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
The Sitemap needs to be clarified and explained in many ways, since people are getting confused. It's on the Todo list. In this instance, Grace is the one being confused, as indeed, "Industry" is a subcat of "People" and meant to include, the professional people and entities creating works that fandom has a relation to, as per Arduinna's examples. --anatsuno 16:21, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Er, okay. The page said "This category contains articles that concern fannish opinions and material aired by the entertainment industry". If what was meant by that was actors then it was written really, really badly. --Kyuuketsukirui 20:36, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

RPF to Real People

I believe the consensus is to tag people in RPF as Category:Real People and leave this as a miscellaneous category. --msilverstar 03:34, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Proposing a Name Change

This name is still confusing me: most writers I've heard don't think of themselves as "Industry", that's more a media term. My proposal: Creators or Source Creators. I'd actually be happier to leave actors on that kind of list, as they are part of the creation. The term's not fabulous, but it reasonably well with the other subcategories:

   * Academia
   * Commentators
   * Fanlore Contributors
   * Fans
   * Source Creators
   * Organizations & Corporations

Scope

This category is a subcategory of people. What do we do with industry related articles that aren't about people? Fans Turned Pro, The Fan Fiction Rant, The Viacom Crackdown, TPTB's Involvement and Interference. --Doro 21:29, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Industry is cross-categorized under Perspectives on Fans, just like Academia, so it looks like the scope note should be changed to something like This category contains articles about professionals in the entertainment and publishing industries of interest to fandom, plus how these industries view fans.--æþel 00:32, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

new subcategories?

This category is too broad to be useful for categorizing people. Almost anyone in the People category aside from the few academics would belong in this category. Based on an earlier comment, I see the guideline was to limit to people not in an RPF category, but everyone relevant to fandom for other reasons could also have RPF written about them. (For example, someone mentioned on the dreamwidth comm that there was a James Marsters-centric fandom that mostly didn't approve of RPF about him, but of course he also appears as a character in fanfic.)

I suggest creating a few subcats like:

  • Television & Film Industry [includes actors, producers, etc.]
  • Music Industry [could include tour managers like Brian Schechter along with record labels, musicians, etc.]
  • Publishing Industry [includes publishers, editors, authors, comic book writers, journalists, etc.]

Then remove the main Industry category from under People and cross-list the subcategories, so we'll have: People

Music Industry
etc.

Industry

Music Industry
etc.

Then only use the main Industry category for non-people articles about TPTB. I can set up more specific person templates to go with the categories.--aethel (talk) 21:55, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

This sounds like a really good idea :)--Harpie (talk) 23:04, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
I like this idea too! --sparc 05:29, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
