Category talk:Fanfiction

I changed the fandom cats to alphabetical sorting as there a likely to be more fandom categories in the future. Strangely enough, I don't see any stories in the index generated by this category that don't have a fandom fanfic cat, for example the James Bond story Queen of Spades, although it it does have the Category:Fanfiction. Is this one of those things that will show up later for some technical reason? ETA: I meant I don't see any pages in this category except for the fandom categories themselves. --Doro 20:25, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

We changed so many templates that the job queue got huge. The pages will all appear in the category eventually. See Special:Statistics.--æþel 20:49, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Question: This page lists 1,031 fics in the section under the fandom categories. I know there are 2016 K/S stories (yes, an overwhelming number) but they aren't on this page by title, just other (all other?) fandoms. Is that the way it's supposed to be? If so, why? --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 17:59, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

All the Star Trek fanfiction appears only in the Star Trek subcategories because I made several Star Trek-specific fanfiction templates. We could make fandom-specific templates to go with all the other categories, but it's a lot of work so I haven't done it yet. I started with Star Trek because it's enormous.--æþel (talk) 21:35, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Terminology

Most categories use "fanfiction," and some use "fan fiction." Does the inconsistency matter in any way? Reason I ask, is I was going to add some Forever Knight fiction and wanted to know if I should go with what's already been used? --MPH (talk) 13:52, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm reasonably certain that any categories that I have made say "fan fiction" because that's the way I write it. --Greer Watson (talk) 06:47, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Which, now that I look at the actual list of subcategories in Category:Fanfiction, pretty well accounts for all of them. Unless maybe my sister made some of the Renault categories.
Does it matter? Because we're the ones doing most of the work in the Renault and Forever Knight fandoms; and, if you change it to "fanfiction" (ugggh!), it will look weird to us every time we add the category. (Admittedly a rather subjective plea....) --Greer Watson (talk) 06:52, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Having thought about it a bit more....
I can say with a fair certainty that my sister and I write "fan fiction" because we were raised to write English as she is writ in the mundane world. I don't say that with any sarcasm, I assure you. I may have had fannish tastes since time immemorial, written a K/S pon farr novel back in the late '80s (never published, now in a box), five or six ST:TNG scripts (probably in the same box), and a 22-episode virtual season of Forever Knight BUT I did all of that before I ever had more than tangential contact with Fandom.
I joined the FK mailing list in 2004. If one distinguishes Fandom from fannishness, then that is when I joined Fandom. My sister joined the MRF LJ community in 2008 or so.
Now FORKNI-L is one of the oldest fannish mailing lists, and MRF drew many of its members from outside fandom proper. Offhand, I cannot recall ever seeing "fanfiction" (as one word) in either place. That's not to say it never was written that way, but not with sufficient frequency for me to notice. By contrast, I quickly became familiar with "fanfic".
(Mind you, I can't speak for the usage on the new RenaultX DW comm.)
It suggests to me though that "fan fiction" is probably the usual spelling for the formal term in those fandoms. ("Fanfic" being informal.)
If any of that helps. --Greer Watson (talk) 07:09, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Look at the Website category page on the FK Wiki. Though there are a few sites with "Fanfiction", "FanFiction", or "Fan-Fiction" in the title, "Fan Fiction" is by far the most common. --Greer Watson (talk) 07:23, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
We had this discussion when we decided on the name for the page Fanfiction (see Consistency in "fanfiction" vs "fan fiction"). Consensus was that fanfiction is the more fannish term and fan fiction the more academic one. Outside perspectives shouldn't define how fans see themselves. As all the academic texts by necessity stick to the webster definition (including TWC) it felt important for a fannish site to give a different perspective. Although that doesn't mean that fannish practice in a single fandom couldn't overwhelmingly be the use of "fan fiction" and there is nothing that says the fandom cats for that fandom can't reflect that. Doesn't change that the default term on this site is "fanfiction". --Doro (talk) 09:57, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I think that categories on Fanlore are the way we organize things, not the way we talk about them. 95% of Star Trek and other older fandoms wouldn't have used "fanfiction" to describe their stories, but we went with that term for consistency. Also, the longer a fandom is around, the more likely it is that there were many ways to self-describe the fiction within it. I think one important thing needed for organization and consistency is to stick with one term; the decision about term "fanfiction" was made a long time ago, and has become the standard for categories. That doesn't negate other language, personal and fannish history, and traditions; other terms can certainly be used with the articles and descriptions, and it should be, as that reflects the "real" history and language. --MPH (talk) 14:19, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Re-categorization of subcategorized fic pages

While talking on the discord server, User:GoldenFalls and I decided to recategorize the fanfiction pages that have fandom subcategories on them. User:Kingstoken jumped in (thank you!!) but, uh, isn't on discord, so it seemed good to have another way to communicate. As far as I'm aware, GoldenFalls started at the beginning of the list and I started at the end. Please strike out fandoms as you complete them to save time.

In case anyone else wants to help:

  • decide on a category to do
  • add |category= to the fanfiction info box
  • then add the fandom-specific subcategory
  • pages should continue to be cross-categorized in non-fandom subcategories (eg Slash Fanfiction)
  • you only have to put one category in the infobox to replace Category:Fanfiction

I've struck out the fandoms I've already done and the fandom categories that have their own infoboxes already. I'm about to start the X-Files categories.

Subcategories

Began the subcat Category:Fanfiction by Fandom for a more organized/consistent view. Have only added a few of the fic-by-fandom subcategories to it yet. Sobqjmv sphinx (talk) 18:38, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Love this change, just ducked in to ask about it as well. Is the plan to add the fandom categories to be subcategories of Category:Fanfiction by Fandom, and then remove them from the parent category? Then the parent category remains a big umbrella with all the fic, but the works are all sorted by fandom in Category:Fanfiction by Fandom? Distracteddaydreamer (talk) 18:46, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Yeah, that's what I would like to happen. It makes the main category a lot more navigable and would mirror the format we have for most by-Fandom subcategories Sobqjmv sphinx (talk) 00:12, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
