Why this must be read: Oh, I love this story so very, very much. John being all hands-on as he teaches Rodney to shoot hits my buttons so hard, I think I *broke* something the first time I read this. "Care in the Holding" is one of my all-time re-reading favourites in this fandom. [1]
This is not AU or gen, but by now you should be able to follow the broad strokes of the canon. I've picked this one because it's character-driven and focuses on the dynamics of the mission team as they go about their business within the city of Atlantis. It's also a favourite of mine. [2]
I adore this story, mainly for the rich attention to detail and the underlying sense that words are not really needed for John and Rodney to connect in the ways that really matter. John teaches Rodney to shoot over the course of the first season. As the months progress, what started as lessons slowly changes into something different. Lacey takes her time, allowing the emotions to start small and slowly build in a way that too many writers don't have the patience to develop.[3]
