Reactions and Reviews

Spock is captain of a Vulcan ship—the Enterprise, a nice twist—and knows he will soon be going tnto'pon farr. He's unbonded, so he decides to go to a brothel on Argellius for a paid companion.

There he meets Kirk who is one of the few humans serving in the Vulcan fleet. They have a sexual liaison (not shown—rats!) and then go their separate ways.

Some time later (six months, I'll get to that later) Kirk is a lieutenant commander assigned to the Enterprise. They pick up their relationship, but without sex (double rats) and they become friends.

I enjoyed their conversation about their personal lives. Also neat was their revelations of their family backgrounds and what made them join the fleet.

McCoy tells Kirk that Spock is going into pon farr (usually better if Kirk finds out on his own) and even though Kirk is willing to help (after all they did it before), Spock doesn't want to accidentally bond with Kirk (although I'm not certain why they didn't before).

Spock's condition is progressing faster because Kirk is near him, and, for reasons of privacy and probably efficacy, he wants to go back to the brothel on Argellius to consummate the pon farr with Kirk.

I really liked many of the secondary characters—the Healer Salen and the bonded couple TKai and Sarn, especially. They were nicely integrated into the story. And when the healer tells Kirk about pon farr I found it utterly charming how matter of fact he was about Kirk's role. He says: "Captain, I advise that you and the lieutenant commander cloister yourselves after your shift tomorrow and begin copulating while you have full control of yourself." So cute! Commence to fucking! I just loved all the advice and the open naturalness everyone had of the situation.

Spock doesn't want to start until Argellius because once he gets started he won't be able to stop. No doubt! A little awkward for me was when Kirk asks Scott to make the ship go faster and tells him why.

Kirk is massaging Spock's neck and Spock makes a funny: "If any part of my body was as hard as a rock, it certainly was not my neck." Cute!

The night before they get to Argellius, they "practice" mind-melding. Some really nice loving emotions here, but they "talk" to each other in the meld just like they would in the physical world. A mind-meld needs something more mystical or ethereal to differentiate it from a regular discussion, otherwise one wonders why they just don't talk to each other.

A minor problem for me was that Kirk and Spock had already had sex in the beginning of the story, so it lessened the tension of their impending encounter. Besides, we didn't even get to see it anyway!

Now I'm sorry, no sex in a story is one thing, but "ninety minutes and three ejaculations later, Spock shook his head as if he were coming out of a daze" is a whole other ballgame. You may not want to have a full-blown sex scene, but there's got to be something.

At least when they took a shower afterwards, there was something. Spock sucked Kirk's toes (this is good) then he gives him a blow-job (this is better) and a little bit of fondling. My kind of writing: "At which point the desirous Vulcan resumed hoisting the smaller man up and down over the hard emerald column which was still conveniently embedded in its favorite haven." Yes sir!

One basic difficulty was the dialogue of all the characters. Everyone, including Kirk and Spock, spoke in a rather formal, almost polite, manner. This is fine for the Vulcan healer and certainly for Spock, but all the others spoke the same way. Just a little loosening would have sounded more like Kirk. Actually, as I recall, McCoy sounded fine.

Also, throughout the story, time is made unnecessarily important. As examples, how long they took to get ready, what time they agreed to meet and exactly how long they talked. Such detail draws attention to itself and distracts from the more important aspects of the story. An exception was when they were ready to beam down to Argellius—that was important to the story.

But I must say there was a lot to like in this new author's story—a vivid imagination, nice story-telling and loving emotions. [1]

I’m sorry I have to say it didn’t touch me at all. As far as I can see the potential was there if we had been invited inside the characters. Now, I’m standing at the sideline behind a one way window, looking on in an abstract and distant way but feeling no connection with the characters whatsoever. [2]

I’m beginning to think I like this alternate reality business. This is the second story I’ve read in Scattered Stars and I found it not the least offensive. In fact, it proved to me once again that when characters are accurately portrayed, the love between Kirk and Spock is quite acceptable and believable in any universe.

This one’s different in several ways. The Enterprise is a Vulcan ship, commanded by Captain Spock. Kirk is a Lt. Commander on a different Vulcan ship and is on leave at a posh resort/brothel. Naturally, it happens to be the same resort selected by the Captain, who is hoping to find a companion who will serve him in his next Pon Farr. I expected some awkwardness between them because of Kirk not revealing his status. Spock believes him to be a paid companion but that quickly becomes an insignificant detail because of the natural affinity between them.

The rest of the story essentially consists of quite vivid descriptions of the progress of their love affair. Kirk is, not surprisingly, assigned to the Enterprise where again the possible discomfort of the situation is non- existent. Sometimes it’s nice when there is just plain lust and physical attraction overcoming all of the possible dampening factors of duty and impropriety and self doubt.

There were some nice minutiae in their lovemaking, my favorite being Spock’s secondary internal testes that required massaging by Kirk to release pent-up ejaculate. A very nice erotic touch, that reminds us Spock is alien, and that his needs are even greater than those of humans. It’s a nicely paced, uncomplicated love affair and eventual bonding with everyone – Spock, Kirk and the whole command crew - happy at the end. [3]
