Camelot's Sweethearts is a Merlin/Arthur modern AU by mariana_oconnor (63,000 words). It was written for reel_merlin round 1. The prompt was America's Sweethearts. The story is linked on many recommendation lists and has been mentioned on newbie guides together with Drastically Redefining Protocol as a good starting point for Merlin AUs.[1] A Merlin story with a similar premise is Fame and Fortune.
Summary: Arthur is a film star, Merlin is his personal assistant who might, possibly be head over heels in love with him. However, Arthur’s more interested in his ex, Morgana, and then the mysterious Sophia to notice… Oh, and Will is awesome.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING IN EVERY WAY. It's a plotty epic contemporary au full of pining and hurt-comfort and angst and massive amounts of detail and insanity that will just suck you in and then blow you away. I spent my whole evening on this, and I don't regret it one bit.[2]

Another entry for reel_merlin, and one of my favorites. I've never seen the movie, so I can't say whether or not the author stayed true to it (though I'm fairly positive she did, she's an awesome writer), but I just loved the whole idea she had here. Everyone was wholly themselves while still being AU. Such a fun, hot read.[4]
Loosley based on the movie America's Sweethearts, this is possibly better than original. It's very funny, well written and well planned/plotted out. Arthur is a self centred brat with a heart beneath it all, Morgana is beautiful and scary, Merlin is snarky and awesome and Will is entirely hilarious in this, and how he and Arthur meet is just perfect. I know it's a long fic, but every word is worth it. The story weaves itself together brilliantly and if just fantastic. Just, go read it.[5]
I really felt bad for Merlin throughout this story, Arthur takes such advantage of him, and Merlin just accepts in. My heart broke for him when Sophia was in the picture, the writing is so fantastic. I never really disliked Arthur, despite his faults, and started to feel for him towards the end. I really recommend this story, I think I have read it at least three times.[6]
This fic is truly magical, even when there’s no magic in it. The author constructs a whole setting for Arthur and Morgana as hollywood stars, with Gwen and Merlin as their suffering PA’s – and all rings perfectly true. All the characters are well written, true to the canon, while still sounding perfectly modern. This fic makes you ache with Merlin, as he pines for oblivious!Arthur, and keeps your feelings up to the end without making the endless pinning sound dull – considering the size of the piece, it -really- is an accomplishment. I just found out this fic was actually written for reel_merlin, so, of course, I have no idea how closely it does or does not follow American Sweetheart’s plot.[7]
A fabulous modern AU set in the Hollywood scene – which could get old, but doesn't. Not when you are talking 63k of well plotted, well characterized fic. It is easy to get lost in the story and forget that it's a trope. Both Arthur and Merlin are fabulous in this. Merlin's has been Arthur's PA for going on 3 yrs, and is quite good at it (while still being Merlin). A very long fic that I just could not put down for minute (yes, one of those I read while washing dishes).[8]
