Cait Sith is a playable character in the Square Enix video game Final Fantasy VII.

Canon

A giant, mechanised plush moogle, Cait Sith is certainly one of the more unique creations in Final Fantasy's history, right up there with Quina Quen and Umaro.

Beneath the cuddly exterior is a machine controlled by Shinra's Reeve Tuesti, who uses it to spy on Cloud's gang. Once found out however, Cait Sith is ironically used to instead spy on the Shinra. This 'change of heart' came about in the Temple of the Ancients, where Cait Sith realised that he actually had friends in AVALANCHE, whilst his Shinra 'colleagues' abused him regularly.

Cait Sith turning against the Shinra proved that you can be the good guy by being the bad guy.

Cait Sith dolls appear as weapons in Final Fantasy X. Cait Sith dolls have a chance of inflicting a given status in tandem with dealing damage, i.e. Fatal Cait Sith has the ability 'Deathtouch', which may knock out the target in a single hit.

Fandom

Cait Sith has received mixed reception from the community. As a playable unit, many find his stat scaling, weapons, and limit breaks to be underwhelming or frustrating compared to others. Additionally, some are unwilling to overlook his less moral actions, such as kidnapping a young child and holding her hostage.[1]

In Celtic mythology, a Cat Sìth is a catlike fairy creature, whose name is apparently pronounced similarly to "kett shee".[2] In Japanese, his name is transliterated as Ketto Shī (ケット・シー). In the English-speaking community, his name is commonly pronounced as "Kate Sith" (rhymes with "eight myth"), such as in Team FourStar's Final Fantasy 7: Machinabridged series.[3]

Shipping

Being a stuffed animal with a cat on top, Cait Sith isn't exactly easy to ship. The best fans can generally hope for is a voyeurism fic featuring him, or a human AU.

Cait Sith's controller Reeve is shipped occasionally however, so it could count as Cait Sith being shipped, only by proxy. Reeve is most commonly shipped with his colleagues, Scarlett and/or Heidegger, with varying levels of consent.
