Bragging Rights is a Kirk/Spock story by Ragdoll.

Reactions and Reviews

I love Academy fic, and "Bragging Rights" by Ragdoll is among the best I‘ve ever read. It was written for the 2009 Advent Calendar and has a Christmas/New Year‘s setting. What a beginning! Reboot Kirk is suffering from a horrible hangover. McCoy gives him a headache remedy – and takes the opportunity to challenge Jim to a wager: if Jim can keep away from women and booze for the month of December, he‘ll give him a bottle of Saurian brandy and all the hangover remedies he‘ll ever need. Jim, certainly of his self control and aggravated by McCoy‘s stated conviction that he won‘t even last "two days", takes him up on it. Jim, forced to take his attention away from women, meets Lt. Commander Spock. Friendship develops, and something more. Jim realizes that Spock is attracted to him – and the feeling is mutual. It quickly occurs to him that there‘s a loophole in McCoy‘s wager: the good doctor didn‘t say anything about men. Ragdoll beautifully depicts the growing friendship and attraction between Kirk and Spock. She pulls off a scene which could have silly in lesser hands: Kirk enlists Spock‘s aid in a snowfight, and Spock participates in a most logical fashion in the ―"mock war game". Ragdoll is a master of dialogue. I could "hear" every single word in my head as if it had been spoken onscreen by the actors. She captures McCoy‘s curmudgeonly complaints and pet phrases perfectly. And I do love Genius!Kirk stories. And wow, can she write a sizzling sex scene! This story is Win! all the way through, with a delightful twist ending that I never saw coming.[1]

I love Academy AU's and this one is fabulous. Love the bet and how it helps to give Kirk the opportunity to really get to know Spock. The development of their relationship was wonderful and the ending! So awesome. :D[2]
