Blue Exorcist, or Ao no Exorcist as it's called in Japan, is a manga series written and illustrated by Kazue Kato. It was later adapted into an anime series with 2 seasons, with a third announced 6 years apart by aniplex on Dec 18, 2022.[1]
Plot
Blue Exorcist follows Okumura Rin, the son of Satan and a human mother, Yuri Egin, and his younger, fraternal twin brother, Yukio. At the beginning of the series, Rin finds out through a traumatic event that his adoptive father, Fujimoto Shiro, and brother are both exorcists who have been protecting him from his own demonic heritage; this culminates in Rin awakening his demonic powers, making contact with Satan and the demon realm, Gehena, and in Shiro's death.
After swearing to avenge his father's death, Rin enrolls in True Cross Academy to train his demonic powers under the tutelage of his brother and extravagant chairman Mephisto Pheles, with the end resolve of killing Satan.
English-language Fandom
At the end of 2011, Blue Exorcist was eligible for Yuletide, the rare fandom exchange.
English fandom of the series is most active on tumblr, where there's a significant number of dedicated accounts that post daily about the series or the characters, especially fanart, meta, memes and sometimes news and scans. On twitter, fans mostly interact with the official sources and the author's personal account, although there's a few fanartist and daily/hourly bots. There's also a couple of known discord servers for the series, in general, and more specific for artists, fanfiction authors and some popular ships.
On AO3, there's currently 3,471 works tagged "Ao no Exorcist | Blue Exorcist", which makes it a medium-sized fandom.
Shipping/Ships
Most prevalent ships are with the protagonist of the series and his classmates and friends,[2] but there's a few incest ships, threesomes and just background characters shipping. Okumura Rin/Suguro "Bon" Ryuji is generally the most popular slash pairing, Okumura Rin/Okumura Yukio (or Okumuracest) being second on AO3. Moriyama Shiemi/Okumura Rin is the most frequent het pairing, Kamiki Izumo/Okumura Rin being second on AO3, and Kirigakure Shura/Okumura Yukio having some prevalence too. Most popular threesome is Amaimon/Mephisto Pheles/Okumura Rin.
Popular entirely secondary cast ships include Fujimoto Shiro/Mephisto Pheles, Amaimon/Mephisto Pheles, Kamiki Izumo/Moriyama Shiemi and Yuri/Shiro(/Satan, sometimes).
