Holy hell. My Hols gift fic was posted, and man, did I ever luck out. You've probably seen this fic recced around already (I read slowly, and I suggest you read this fic slowly, because it deserves to be savoured, not rushed through) and you might notice its already high comment count despite its length, and I'll tell you--those things are completely earned. This fic is exceptional. It's like getting the chance to read Book 8, where Book 8 is Harry/Draco. The writer makes every single character come to life, complete with strengths and flaws. She uses the canon setting beautifully. She tells a story complete with a gripping mystery and heart-swelling, slow-building romance. And everything is woven together. Everything is seemless. The female characters are treated with respect and the writer's love of canon shines through powerfully. I'm just in heaven. I want to dive in and read it again right away.
I want to do this justice, because it deserves it. So I'll first direct you to melusinahp's rec but be warned that there are spoilers in the comments because it's the sort of fic you want to talk about. This fanfic is unique in that it feels like a book 8 – which I’m afraid has become a trope as far as comments go. 'wow! This could be book 8!' but this one... actually could (if JKR wanted Harry and Draco to have explicit sex in her book). But outside of the pairing, the characters and the plot are done perfectly in JKRs style. The humour is true to the book humour. The way Harry ‘notices things’ (how his friends are acting, insignificant details) and as a reader you know these things are clues and you tuck them away because they are clearly important and you’ll need them later. And mixed in with all the typical collection of characters moving through eight year with an odd mystery you have this slow burning ~thing~ going on between Draco and Harry. This wasn't using fanfic to 'fix' canon, but using fanfic to continue canon... with H/D as a reasonable possibility.
This story feels like one of the books, because there are so many things happening, it's like the author keeps giving you pieces of a puzzle and at the end everything makes sense and falls into place.Strange things are happening at Hogwarts for Harry's 8th year, disappearances, mysterious attacks, and in one way or another is affecting everyone in the school. Harry wants to save them all, but he feels he's missing something, that final clue that will make everything make sense. And there's Draco, who is awaking all sorts of feelings in Harry, and just can't stay away from.
It's really so very well crafted. It's intriguing and exciting. There are so many characters playing part of it. It's just incredible, and I'm certainly not making it justice.
Like I said before, it feels like if there were an 8th book of the series, this would be it.
This is one of my all-time favorite Drarry fics. I remember staying up most of the night to read this one and it was soo worth it. It is so wonderfully written that it basically reads like another HP book. Everyone here is at their best, Harry, Draco, Hermione, Ron, Lavender, EVERYONE! It is very plotty, sweet, it has awkward first sex and Draco-obsessed Harry - basically everything that I love. I know it's been recced all over the place, but well, it IS one my favorites so how could I not put it here. A MUST.– secka [5]
This was so incredible I can’t even begin to describe how much I absolutely loved it! The slow build up to Harry and Draco’s romance, the fantastic plot and subplots, characteristics, freaking everything! I am freaking out here, it was so good! I completely forgot the word count was on 96k I just kept on reading, and I’m horrible at reading fics on more than 50k! I had me from the beginning, I just never wanted it to stop. This was one of the most original fics I’ve ever read. I just don’t know what to say. Congratulations, faithwood for completely blowing my mind away. And I just loved every single character!
