Reactions and Reviews

This enjoyable story had a plot that was a little different, with a Mirror Universe character involved years past the events in "Mirror, Mirror". It’s set soon after ST V, which here is about a year after the events of ST II, III and IV. Kirk and Spock are back on the Enterprise, and Spock is late getting back from a trip to Vulcan, where he went to dispose of Sybok’s katra. Kirk is a little peeved when the story starts, because Spock has missed their joint birthday party. When he gets back to their quarters, Spock is there, and aggressively demands that they make love. They make wild and passionate love all night. (One complaint: we are told that they made love all night. I would have liked to have read some of this love making described!)

When Kirk awakens early in the morning, Spock is uncharacteristically romantic, calling Kirk "my treasure", and acting entranced by his beauty. Kirk finds out later that day he actually was making love with the Mirror Spock, and the story continues as he and his Spock discuss and deal with the situation, and resolve some problems in their relationship. And, there’s an interesting twist about who the Mirror Spock is actually bonded to. That was a surprise! I did find a few things in the story a bit confusing. For example, the reason why Spock and Mirror Spock changed places was not revealed until the very end of the story. Even after the Spocks return to their respective universes, there is no discussion of this. I would think this would be one of the first things Kirk would ask his Spock, so I found the omission of this distracting because I kept wondering as I read the story exactly how this had happened. And there was no reason that I could see why the disclosure of this information needed to be at the end of the story. Also, I found it confusing there was no mention of Mirror Spock’s beard, or lack of one. I guess you were supposed to figure out that the Mirror Spock had stopped wearing his beard, or he would have immediately been detected when he arrived on our Enterprise. But it’s never explained. It’s one of those little details that had me scratching my head at the end going...wait a minute, what about Mirror Spock’s beard?

However, despite these minor problems I did enjoy this story. [1]
