Summary

"All of Kirk and Spock's friends and relatives are there for their 25th anniversary."

Excerpt

"Let’s dance, Jim,” Spock purred. Mesmerized by the totally out-of-character act, Jim allowed himself to be led onto the dance floor. Lean powerful arms encircled him, holding him close. Hot breath tickled his ear. They began to sway to the music. Two by two, the other couples left the floor. Soon only the two lovers remained. The music flowed through their minds and bodies as they moved together, the dance a visible extension of their love. Uhura would always swear that they were glowing with a special aura that night as they circled the floor. She found herself crying from the sheer beauty of it. There they were, Jim’s face tight pressed to his lover’s shoulder, and Spock, his face tilted up to the stars, a look of divine ecstasy lighting his features. Everyone in the room was silent, awestruck by the phenomenon, the love…. When the music finally died away into silence, Jim lifted his face to meet Spock’s gaze. Tenderly, reverently, the Vulcan bent his head and kissed him."

Reactions and Reviews

I absolutely go ballistic when they dance together. Present time happenings are intermixed with flashbacks. Not too many to make it predictable, not too long either to detour us from the main theme: Kirk and Spock celebrating their 25th anniversary. I had some trouble though with something in the first flashback. Going through Starfleet Academy and serving all those year on a human-crewed ship, is it conceivable that Spock wouldn't have acquired the mental skills to block out an excess of emotional upheaval of human celebrations? [1]

"Anniversary Waltz" by Tere Ann Roderick shows Kirk and Spock at their 25th anniversary party. All the old ENTERPRISE crew members attend, aged but still breathing, and Kirk and Spock get to remember a few choice, good times. A good ideal but a little too saccharine. [2]

"Anniversary Waltz," by T.A. Broderick, is a warm, thoroughly wonderful, loving story about the 20th (or so) anniversary of Kirk and Spock's bonding. It is done with perfect flashbacks that give a true sense of time passed. The expression of their long-term love is very touching. You will get a deep, cozy sense of love from this one. [3]

Anniversary Waltz by Tere Roderick (8 pages) contained a nice idea; Spock & Kirk, bondmates for many years, get together with all the old crew for a 25th anniversary celebration. Interspersed with Kirk's loving reminiscences, this was sentimental & enjoyable. [4]

If you ever want to read a short feel-good story, this would be a grand choice! You‘re drawn into the spell of Kirk and Spock while attending their 25th anniversary party along with 500 other acquaintances. Those old friends, shipmates and former enemies fade into the background, though, as you are treated to the couple‘s memories of key moments in their lives. As in most memories, there are a few specifics but generally just a nice warm haze of love settles over you.

You‘ll learn what most of the crew are doing later in their lives, knowing the one thing they all still have in common is their respect and affection for the former command team of the Enterprise. Spock and Kirk seem so genuine, making it sheer magic to watch them dance the evening‘s last dance together. I‘ll let you in on the ending and you‘ll see what I mean: 'When the music finally died away into silence, Jim lifted his face to meet Spock‘s gaze. Tenderly, reverently, the Vulcan bent his head and kissed him.

The party was over, but the legend remained.'[5]
