Alternative is a Kirk/McCoy story by Karen Fleming.

It was published in R & R #11.

Description

Kirk is stressed out. McCoy is worried. McCoy offers to find him a woman, but Kirk says he doesn't have time for that. McCoy reads in a medical journal heterosexual same-sex play hasn't "ruined anyone," and that bi-sexuality is natural among animals. He thinks that some sex is what Jim needs. He asks Spock if when he was in Jim's brain during a mind meld, if Jim had any thoughts of same-sex relationships. Spock tells McCoy that's an invasion of privacy. McCoy goes to Jim's cabin and offers him a back rub. Jim agrees. McCoy rubs his back, and then handles Jim's penis. Jim is shocked, but when McCoy explains why, agrees to have sex. The two men kiss and try to have sex, but they both find it too funny, and stop. Both have a good laugh.

An Excerpt

"Now cut that outl" A grin trembled on McCoy's face, bringing him perilously close to laughter before he suppressed It. "This is serious."

"I know...." With a great effort of will Jim stifled a final giggle and composed himself. But this tine just the sight of McCoy coming for the kiss caused a renewed eruption. This time the contagion swept over McCoy, who began to chuckle too as Kirk's giggles ran amok, climbing to ever high pitch as control slipped completely from him. "I'm sorry," Jim gasped between spasms, "but...I just couldn't...couldn't get Interested, and...and my mind...my mind just kept...switching back and forth between you...and the woman. And finally...finally I got this....this weird picture of you and...of you with a woman's breasts.'

At that he collapsed Into a gale of laughter, almost choking in his efforts to stifle It.

That set McCoy off too, laughing so hard that he slipped right off the bed. When at last it subsided, he climbed back onto the bed. "Well, I guess that's that."

Wiping tears from his eyes, Kirk sat up shakily on the edge of the bed. "Bones, thanks for the thought anyway." Breathing deeply to dispell the last shaky giggles, he shot McCoy a wide grin. "And I haven't had a good laugh In a long time. It probably did me some good."

McCoy began to pull on his pants. "Yeah, well I hate to admitit, but I guess Spock was right."

"Spock? You talked to Spock about this?"

McCoy stopped in the midst of pulling on his shirt. "More or less. I suggested that you needed...a companion. He said I should leave that to you."

"Good for Spock."

With his shirt now snugly in place, McCoy reached for his boots. "But you shoulda seen him. He lit out of the room like I was going to drag him down here and force you two to have at it."

"Knowing you, I don't blame him." A grin spread across Jim's face and faded to a thoughtful half-smile. "But I can't imagine making love to Spock, either. I can't even imagine him naked."

"I've seen him." After a theatrical pause, McCoy added, "You're not missing anything."

"I'll take your word for It."

Reactions and Reviews

McCoy fusses over the captain's need for sexual relief, and decides he'll just have to take matters into his own hands. The reactions of both parties here are great, as they each first resist, then decide to give it a try. The encounter fails due to inability to stay serious.[1]

Kirk, having been burnt once too often, now refuses to get intimate with female crewmembers. McCoy decides to convince him to experiment with males. The author handles the idea gingerly at first, but it turns out as one of the best examples of stories on same-sex possibilities I've read in fanfic. Best of zine award.[2]

Since it is editorial policy to not print K/S stories, here's a Kirk/McCoy story instead.[3]
