Reactions and Reviews

1985

Alien is unrelieved gloom. It's not badly written, but you'd have to be depressed to enjoy it, and if you were depressed when you started the story, you'd be suicidal when you finished. Plus, the last line is the deadly, To be continued... [1]

1998

"Alien” deals with Kirk’s pain and despair. Spock has left him again, he has blocked Kirk’s access to their bond and in effect is trying to destroy it. The only thing holding Kirk up is his hope that Spock will come back to him, his memories of their time together fueling that hope and his duty to Starfleet and the Federation. I fear that if the author doesn’t give a more positive outlook in the sequel, that is exactly what Kirk is going to be left with. I don’t know, looking at the way things went in the first part, if he’ll keep his sanity. It hurts." [2]
