A Step to the Left is a Merlin/Arthur genderswap story by greensilver (43,800 words).

The story features "always a girl"!Merlin and is a retelling of the complete first series. Without changing the character dynamic from the show the genderswitch reveals how incredibly romantic that dynamic between first season Merlin and Arthur actually is. Of course with a het pairing the other characters react to the obvious UST and the unseemly close relationship between prince and servant, which changes the plot in interesting ways.

Sadly the author ran out of story (or episodes) and A Step to the Left is left unfinished.

Recs and Reviews

girl!merlin. Does 'campy' apply to het? If it does, this fic is as campy as the show. Funny and bitter-sweet with the shifting ratio of bitterness to sweetness as appropriate. This stops short at the penultimate chapter, a situation that fills me with sadness and woe. Woe, I tell you.[1]

One of the most landmark girl!Merlin stories ever. greensilver really goes into detail, deviating from the series where appropriate due to Merlin's switched gender. I read this one over and over again and never get tired of it."[2]

This is a brilliant re-telling with Merlin in what amounts to an amalgam of Gwen's role and the Merlin of canon. Greensilver deftly re-writes each canon episode entwining it with the court intrigue that follows from a female Merlin. This is just brilliant! It's still technically a WIP, but that doesn't matter and the chapters mostly stand alone.[3]
