Reactions and Reviews

[art by Jackie Zoost]: This is the most beautiful picture of Spock's face I have ever seen! The artist has definitely captured his features to perfection. It IS Spock! A must see for Spock lovers! [1]

"A Private Mission" involves the recovery of Spock from personal injuries sustained during an undercover mission involving himself and Kirk. This is mostly a hurt/comfort story, with Kirk as the strength for Spock as they return to Starfleet Command and go through debriefing. It is predictable, but interesting. The characters are gentle and caring. A sweet K/S story using a tired theme. [2]

This story has it all: lots of h/c, trust, friendship, loyalty and love. There is also a beautiful picture of Spock that accompanies the story. Spock is missing and Kirk is searching for him on the pianet where the two men are on a secret mission. He finds Spock unconscious in a dingy hotel bedroom. Kirk is of course devastated to find that Spock has obviously been tortured and there is also some evidence of sexual abuse. Kirk beams them back to the shuttle craft that they are using for this mission and the story unfolds from there. I love the way Kirk cares for Spock in this story, and I love the way Spock responds. Through this ordeal they discover the love between them that has always been there. There are many tender and touching moments in this beautifully written piece. A story you won't soon forget. [3]

This story is one of three in the anthology The Sound of Rain. Spock has been captured and tortured for intelligence information on a secret mission the two undertake. He has also been sexually abused. Though Kirk finds him an hour later, a lot can happen to a person in an hour. The first words the Vulcan speaks after regaining consciousness are, ―They got no information from me.‖ Kirk replies, ―You don‘t have to tell me that.‖ To which Spock says, ―But that is all that matters.‖ Of course, to Kirk, Spock is only thing that does matter.

When they have to face a debriefing by Admiral Stone at Starbase 7, the captain‘s protective instincts surface in full measure. In the wake of that meeting and with a full medical examination to come, Spock is understandably depressed. There‘s a lovely little passage where Spock suspects Kirk of spending the last night with Spock in their room on the base because he is worried about him. He believes Kirk would rather be seeing ―friends‖-read women?-on this last night before their ship returns to claim them. Kirk cleverly convinces the Vulcan that he is the only friend he wishes to spend time with. When Kirk is restless in his sleep that night, he manages to fall out of his bed and becomes so tangled in his sheets he cannot get free. Yeah, I know this is a little thin, but it gives them the opportunity for the intimacy that happens when Spock‘s nearness causes Kirk to experience an erection. And right there on the floor, Kirk realizes he is in love with his first officer and dearest friend: ―Spock was beautiful... like darkness... like a shadow...a dream visiting in the night...a dream of complete fulfillment.‖ The love between them proceeds to a very satisfying conclusion.

The other stories, artwork and especially the poetry from this talented woman have enriched our fandom considerably. This zine has excellent examples of all three. [4]
