A Gift from the Past is a gen Starsky and Hutch 80-page novel by Marij. The interior art are manips by JJ.

front cover, artist is JJ

The story is very sentimental and includes much cuddling and snuggling.

The original character, fourteen year old Jennifer Joelle prefers to be called "JJ." This is likely a tuckerization reference to Jane of Australia, the zine' publisher and artist, and part of why the disclaimer mentions that the story is "to some extent even about fans."

Flyer

"Here's a surprise, and a pleasure! We'd been waiting for this story, expecting it to be included in DORN #3, because JJ was sure the final draft would be slash. Turned out, it's actually gen -- so here is our first gen S&H title. It's a beauty, guys ... not slash, but a great read for Hutch fans."

Summary

Summary from the publisher: "Some years ago, one of Hutch's relationships resulted in a daughter he never knew he had. The lady with whom he shared his life for a time has recently passed away and the daughter has made her way to California to find her father. Hutch."

Excerpts

The opening paragraph:

The small, blond girl looked lost. She stared at the big building before her. 'Police Station. Metropolitan Division' it said. She looked at the paper in her hand. She hesitated, then walked up the steps and went inside.

It was a busy place, all kinds of people were running around, so it seemed. She acted as if she was looking for someone, but she didn't find whoever she was looking for. Finally, someone came up to her.

"Can 1 help you?" asked a friendly voice. The voice belonged to a policeman named Andrew Wilson. He had seen the girl come in and felt a little sorry for her, because she looked so nervous.

She hesitated, then answered: "I'm looking for someone who's supposed to work here?"

Detective Sergeant Kenneth Hutchinson was a good-looking man in his early thirties. He was tall, lean, had blond hair and gorgeous blue eyes. He was dressed neatly, in blue corduroy pants, a grey turtle-neck sweater and a dark blue jacket.

[...]

His partner and best friend. Detective Sergeant David Starsky, sat at the desk opposite tris. He was also in his early thirties, good-looking and also had wonderful, al though a little darker, blue eyes, but there the resemblance stopped. His hair was dark and curly and he wasn't as tall as his blond-haired buddy. Besides that he was not dressed as neatly as him. Starsky wore torn up bleached jeans, a sloppy sweater and a worn out dark brown leather jacket.

After a short silence, Jenny said; "You know, daddy, when mom died I thought I could never be happy again. Of course 1 still miss her, but I'm so glad I found you."

Hutch kissed her on her hair. "I don't know what I'd do without you," he said. "I can't imagine life without you anymore, honey." His voice trembled and he sounded a little emotional.

"Whatever happens, we'll be together, right?" Jenny said drowsily.

"You can count on that. It's you and me, no matter what."

Jenny was half asleep by now, but she managed to open her eyes one more time.

"And Starsky," she mumbled. Then she fell asleep.

Hutch looked at his sleeping daughter and smiled. "And Starsky," he whispered and with Jenny safe in his arms he fell asleep too.
