"A Dog's Life" is a short story by Greer Watson based on Mary Renault's 1953 novel The Charioteer. It is set between the first two chapters of the book, when Laurie is at boarding school. The story is seen from the perspective of his dog, Gyp, who has a very puzzling afternoon.
"A Dog's Life" was written in response to a comment made by trueriver after the author posted a description of steak-and-kidney pie to a discussion of food in the novel: "Oh your descriptions are WONDERFUL! I hope they feature in a nice, comfy fic at some point! ;)".[1] The story was originally posted to the community on 31 May 2012, in a members-locked post and shortly thereafter placed on the author's website.
