In Naruto canon, ANBU (暗部), which stands for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai (暗殺戦術特殊部隊) are an elite force (the black ops) who take on special high-level missions. ANBU are a frequent source of inspiration for fanfiction writers and fanartists, as placing a character in ANBU makes for good darkfic, angst, mission sex, anonymous sex, or identity porn. Many people also find the ANBU uniform sexier than the standard gear the ninja wear, which can lead to uniform kink stories.
Fanfic may deal with characters who were canonically ANBU, there are also stories about characters who are revealed to have been secretly ANBU all along. The younger characters may be promoted to ANBU as soon as they are old enough.
